The quality of seedlings used in the plantations has improved through a seed breeding program sponsored by ATTIA. Good seeds and planting techniques have resulted in Maria River Plantations having healthy plants with one of the highest survival rates in the industry.

When all the plantations were developed, one of our concerns was to ensure that there was a suitable water supply to support the production process. Working with local authorities and being prepared to undertake substantial earthworks programs have ensured that the plantations have either good water storage or flood irrigation capability.

Additional land is still available on the plantations to ensure capacity for growth.

All harvesting equipment and distillery facilities are owned by the plantation management. This enables us to harvest at the best time and ensure the best quality and price for our customers. Our harvester is a 430 hp John Deere Self Propelled Forage Harvester capable of harvesting in excess of 300 tons of leaf matter per day.

After harvest, the tea tree foliage and branchlets are steam distilled. Our distillation facility is one of the larger and more modern facilities in Australia having been completed in 2004. It is capable of processing 200 tonnes of biomass per day that can produce in excess of 2,000 kg of Tea Tree Oil. It was designed to maximise output with minimum environmental impact.

After distillation, oil is held in a day tank to ensure proper settling before being transferred to stainless steel storage tanks. These are light proof, topped up with nitrogen and stored in a cool dry area. Oil samples are then sent for testing and are batched ready for sale to customers.

Storage & Shipment Top Of Page

Maria River Plantation has over 50,000 liters of stainless steel storage tank capacity to hold oil stock for batching and blending. In addition to this, the plantations keep a substantial stock of oil ready in stainless steel drums to ensure its ability to supply promptly from samples provided to customers.

Once an order is received, it is either supplied from the ready stainless steel drum batches or where required for larger orders seeking single batch characteristics, the oil from our large tanks is pumped via a filtrations system in to stainless steel drums and weighed. The drums are then labeled with all compliance notices and is ready for shipment.

Maria River Plantations has been shipping oil inter-state and internationally since 2000 and had a good understanding of the procedures needed to be complied with and a good working relationship with a number of reputable freight carriers.

Post Harvest Care Top Of Page

In order to sustain high quality products and above industry production yields, we believe in the need to maintain the environment from which the oil originates.

After harvesting, slashing is carried out by knowledgeable staff using our plantation modified equipment. Herbicides and insecticides are kept to a minimum and strict guidelines are followed to ensure the most appropriate use of chemicals. The use of cattle and the promotion of the eco system on the plantation are aimed at increasing our ability to achieving a more natural plant management process.

Our efforts have encouraged the return of many species of native bird and wildlife to the area.
